Wiki Topics - How to Collaborate on Content

Discourse provides the access to make any topic a wiki. This allows multiple people to edit the topic and work on it together.

There are some constraints, so it’s worth being aware of them:

  • You cannot restrict access to a specific group of people. Anyone who has write access to that category and the appropriate trust level can edit the wiki.
  • You can turn a topic into a wiki topic and then revert it later. So this can be used to gain updates before later “publishing”.
  • Discourse does not (currently) allow co-editing, so multiple users cannot edit the wiki topics at the same time.

To change a topic into a wiki post, you will need to be Trust level 3 or above. (You can see your current trust level in your profile, by clicking the “Expand” button, trust level 3 is “regular”, for more details on trust levels see the trust level blog post.)

  • Create your topic post and save it.
  • Click on the ellipsis button at the bottom of the content.

  • Click on the wrench button and select “Make Wiki”
  • You can tell it is now a wiki because the “Reply” button changes to “Edit”, and the pencil icon for editing changes to the reply icon.

At this point anyone with trust level 1 or above can edit the topic. Replies can still be created by using the reply icon.

To revert the topic back to a normal post, just repeat the steps above, but this time the “Make Wiki” button will be called “Remove Wiki”. Do not be concerned, this will not delete the topic, it just changes it back from a wiki to a normal post. You might want to do this to collaborate with friends on a tip, for example.
