Who is snooping in my Mail DB?

We have a potential mail DB snooper. This person sits on the helpdesk so has Admin rights to all mail DB’s. Is there any way via DOmino Admin or other method to see what Mail DB’s this user is snooping thru? OR can I go to a Mail DB and see if this user has opened this particular mail DB?

thank you

ron

Wow! Interesting topic! I hope your Snooper doesn’t read this forum! 8-D

What gave him away in the first place?

Check the log.nsf of the server - Usage\By User. That may show you if the person in question has been opening databases they shouldn’t have.

Allow a little advice for security awareness.

Just to be on the safe side and not allow this “snooper” to log in as the owner of the mail, you should enable the Password Check on your server and ask your users to change their password. This will register their password in the Person Document and whenever a user logs in, the system will check the password they typed against the one registered in the Person Document. If they are different the user will get an error message about not being able to use multiple id files.

This feature is useful when you assign a standard password at user registration and keep a copy of the original id and/or have id recovery enabled.

Hope this helps

Hi Ron,

You can usually look at the activity on the database properties info tab. There is a user detail button that will show you the read/writes of the database. It won’t help you if the snooper is using the same id, but if they are using the heldesk id, then it would show.

Clint - Thank you for the quick reply. I went to the DB of concern, under the “User Activity” area of the Info tab, I did have to check “Record Activity”. So I guess form here on out any activity will be recorded.

Thank you again - I will update the posting if this does work.

Have a good one

Send an email to the mail DB in question and check that you want a reciept acknowledgement. Put a real juicy title on it like “Salary Reviews for 2007” and in the Body put a spreadsheet attachment and just put the word “Gotcha” at the top of it. They will not be able to resist the temptation and you will get a receipt acknowledgement. Of course tell the actual user of the mail db not to touch the document. There was a considerable thread in this forum a few months ago about this same issue. Then when you find the person immediatly escort them to the front door with a Pink Slip.

Great idea - sometimes it’s the simple things that I don’t have a clear vision on. Here I am thinking like an agent to watch the DB, or some other high tech means.

Thanks for your help.

This may be a good idea. But do you think “non-user” of the mailbox opens this unread mail? My guess is he may see the content of already read mail. But not the new one even though he gets tempted. If that person wants to take a pink slip that’s a different issue, no one can stop him.

Subject: RE: Who is snooping in my Mail DB?

If this person is logged in as themselves, all the mail in the other mail db shows as unread. If this person logs in as the mail file user, then they will see read/unread marks.

Subject: RE: Who is snooping in my Mail DB?

He will log in as him only because he is admin and has access to all mail boxes. Not UserIDs. Here Question is not about the the display of unread mail or read mail.

Subject: RE: Who is snooping in my Mail DB?

THis is correct…the issue is there is an admin that I believe is reading other users emails. And I am working with another admin to figure out how to trace this. I believe I have a good source from the first reply to this posting. By going to the DB properties, Info Tab and USer Detail which will show user Activity. This admin (Snooper let’s call them), is logged into their own system with their own username so to clarify that it is not a general account being used. So snoopers entry should show up in this User Activity.
