We are a small company looking to setup Domino 6.01. We need to investigate the pros/cons of using Solaris over Windows 2000. Are there any comparisons, white papers available. Summary of what they can do and can’t do would be great.Which OS should I use and why. If I have a windows environment and some Linux servers then which one may be a better fit?

I know your options are Windows or Solaris, but I can tell you that we’re currently migrating 300 Users from Novell Groupwise to Domino6 running on SuSE Linux and we are completely satisfied.Things look quite promising, and installation of Domino on linux was absolutely easy.
Additionally, we chose good but reasonably priced x86 hardware which enables us to have an extra hotspare server for the same amount of money one RS/6000 oder Sun Solaris machine would have cost.

I agree with the other posters who say that if you have yet to buy a Sun box, youmay want to consider Linux. However, the most important question is “Where is your expertise?” If you have no Unix/Linux admins, I’d go with a Windows solution. and the converse is true as well.

If you’ve already got a right-sized Sun box, I’d use Solaris. If you have yet to acquire the server hardware, I’d recommend Linux. I currently have three Domino 6.0 servers (1 IBM AIX unix, 2 Windows) running and am about to add a 4th (Linux). The Windows-based servers (One W2K, the other NT4) need constant babysitting and restarts about every other day due to the Domino services hanging. The AIX machine however is mostly quite stable and a very good performer, but about every two weeks suddenly and spontaneously has a MASSIVE memory leak, exhausting the operating system of all real and swap memory, bringing everything to a grinding crawl until I bounce the Domino server process. I’m now handling that by including a weekly cron job that bounces Domino. No reboots of the box itself are ever needed, since it’s AIX
When I was evaluating Domino, I did so on a SuSE 7.x Linux server (Compaq Proliant hardware) with Domino 5.0.9. I never experienced any memory leaks or other problems that required arbitrary reboots or anything like that. I only had 12 users on it at a time, but it was stable and performed well.
