I recommend using NSD, which is built-in to both the client and server. You can successfully close all open threads of a Notes or Domino instance and collect some information about the final state. NSD is run from a command line: switch to the data directory of the instance that needs to be closed and type NSD -KILL

For clients only try KillNotes or StopNotesBoth located at http://www.geocities.com/manyjumpers/NotesDomino/notesdomino-index.htm

For servers it is best to use NSD that comes with Notes.
