View index sizes

Hi

we have a database that is 4.5Gb in size and when looking into the view sizes it shows the total view idex size to be 4Gb!!

The largest index is 382Mb in size.

I am making sure that views have as few columns as possible and columns are not sortable and removing things like date related selection formulas.

The largest view just shows all docs by size.

The database has 60000 docs and has about 145 views. I realise that this is a lot and we are working to reduce the amount but I’m confused as to why the total index size in so large (85% of the total db size) and also why one view has such a large index.

Any help would be welcome

Thanks

Mark.

I’m not surprised with that many views. Databases can double or triple, even with a reasonable number of views. You probably have many views which can be combined. You probably have obsolete/unused views. Consider setting the view property to discard indexes after 21 days. You will notice that views using @ALL in the selection formula will probably be the biggest. If your database is fairly static, the indexer will not have much trouble keeping up reindexing the views. So, if the diskspace is not a problem and the documents don’t change much, don’t worry about it. Still, it appears you have lots of room to start chopping on redundant views.
