Subject: RE: Using newer version of designer on older databased
I had not heard anything like this related to R7.
The closest thing I remember was when an upgrade caused an ODS (on disk structure) change to the way that agents were saved. In that case, the new designer was saving features that the old designer couldn’t read. I do not think that it caused any corruption.
Things will be fine as frog hair for while, then one day the application will simply break in some random fashion. It will be completely impossible to repair it with the newer Designer. However, open the database using the correct Designer version and re-save all the design and it will again function correctly. No no edits, no changes of any kind. Simply rebuild the entire thing using the proper Designer.
I’ve seen this over and over and over, where others use a newer Designer to edit something, weeks to months later it fails, then I go in with the right Designer and rebuild it. It’s why I have Notes versions back to R5 installed and ready (and why R8.5 not playing nicely with older versions was such a horrid PITA). I always use the appropriate Designer version for the database I’m editing. Absolutely no exceptions ever for any reason.
