Upgrading Domino Server with Trend Micro Scan Mail

Please take note all Trend Micro customers…

Unfortunately, we had to troubleshoot this on our own since Trend Micro had not posted any public documentation about this problem.

We upgraded our 6.5.1 Domino Servers to 6.5.3 this past weekend and received the lovely …

"ComponentError returned the following data transfer error.

Setup will now abort

MediaName: Data

Component: ProgramFiles

FileGroup: ProgramFiles

File: d:\notes\js32.dll

Error Number: -115"

While the error typically leads you to believe that notestat needs to be disabled or the box needs to be rebooted, the following is the only thing that allowed us to bypass the install error.

What we discovered is that in running the Trend ScanMail 2.6 SP1 Build 1577 and the new Control Manager agent, Domino will puke on an upgrade unless you first shutdown the “Trend Micro Management Infrastructure” service, which powers the Control Manager for updates.

This is the first Domino upgrade we have performed since upgrading to the latest Control Manager agent.

We contacted our Trend Account Rep and he stated that they knew about the problem, but did not have any documentation. They said they would be putting something out soon.

Hello,This is similar to an issue I’ve seen many times when Norton AV (realtime scanning) is running on a Domino server.

It’s not a major problem, you can get the notes.ini file back by searching for notes.000 and renaming it back to notes.ini. Then disable the AV service and restart the server. Then you can run setup again and all is OK. Once upgraded enable the AV service again.

I always think it’s best to disable any AV software running on the server prior to running the Domino install/upgrade.

Here is the document from TrendMicro, although it doesn’t specifically address the Control Manager agent. I guess it’s better than nothing.
