We have a client who is still on Domino/Notes 4.6, and they want to upgrade to 8.5. Is there a direct migration path, or do they first need to be upgraded to R6+?
Subject: It depends…
My group just completed an upgrade from 4.6 to 7.0.3 for a client that was not using Notes for mail and decided against incremental upgrades. We just un-installed 4, installed 7 and moved the apps into place.
The key to success in our case was building out a simulation environment for testing purposes, thoroughly documenting the upgrade process and walking through the steps numerous times beforehand. We had a lot of bug fixes, but it went remarkably well considering the age of the application.
If mail or any other complexities had been in place, we might of taken a different route. My .02
At any rate - have fun and good luck!!!
Subject: 6.5.x, then 8.5
Subject: Pretty sure they’ll need to go to 6.something, then 8.5.
Subject: Thanks, that what I thought
… and if I remember correctly, you first upgrade the server, the databases, then the clients. Is that correct?
Subject: If you are re-using the same server yes, if you go to new server then you can go directly
Depending on if you what all notes apps or some web apps. Web config is much different so needs a lot of setup.
\Notes apps will work with minor changes.
Mail is the big one, using the convert utility should get 95% there. you will find some mail files with problems.
Having a clean install will help in that only the dbs you need are migrated and you get to clean out all the old crap.
