It seems that when I read a note in either the home tab, or in the mail tab, mark the note read, and then move to a folder - the note then becomes unread in that new folder. I think that the note should stay in a “read” state once you mark it that way.

Hi, I know this is an old topic, but for me it was still relevant, and I have also seen other posts with the same problem.
I agree with you, that the documents read state should be maintained when moved to a (different) folder.
You can actually do this (I’m using Notes 8.5.3 CD5).

Open your workspace
-
select your notes mail database
-
right click and select application ->properties
-
click the design tab (middle one for me)
-
check the “do not mark modified documents as unread”
