Type-ahead name lookup madness

Hi all.

Having been on Notes 6/ Domino 6 for a month, I have noticed a strange problem. I hope that some of you experts have time to read this.

Background:

We are using Directory Assistance in order to be able to lookup addresses in a secondary address book . With R5 this has worked flawlessly.

Problem:

If I create a new memo and type the short name (e.g. “abc”) for somebody in the secondary address book and press Enter, Notes looks up the full name of the person.

However, the second time I type the same short name (“abc”) and press Enter nothing happens…

Even worse is that this seems to be cached somewhere, because Notes will not lookup the shortname (“abc”) anymore, no matter if I shut down Notes and try again…

The same behaviour appears if I try to lookup, using the common name. It only works the first time, then never again…

It does not help, if I switch to another workstation and try again…

Other observations:

With our primary address book, the name lookup works correctly and can be repeated.

This issue is extremely annoying and I have checked the fix list for 6.01 but haven’t found anything indicating that this bug has been fixed.

I hope this is a setup/configuration error at our site.

Anybody?

Regards,

Kenneth

Kenneth,

I wasn’t able to duplicate the problem that you’re seeing. I used a Notes 6.0x client against a Domino 6.0x server which pointed at a remote address book on another 6.0x server.

There are some aspects of your setup that really aren’t clear to me though. You’re pointing a Notes 6.0 client against a Domino 6.0 server with directory assistance. Is the secondary address book local to the server, or is it on another server? Is there a local dircat on the client? Were there any messages on the server console? Did the server respond to other requests? Does typeahead work for non-shortname address fields?

Hi John.

Yes, the secondary address book is local to the server.

No, I don’t have a dircat locally on the client.

The type-ahead also fails for the Common name, Full name, etc. the second time I try it…

Funny enough, it also seems user dependant.

For my collegues (normal users), the type-ahead works as it should, until I try it (I am server administrator). An example: If normal user types “abc” and hits enter, the full name is looked up in the secondary address book. This can also be repeated without problems. However, if I type “abc” and hit enter, the full name is looked up the first time, but fails after that. After this, the “abc” lookup also fails for the normal users…
