Two SMTP Servers: 1. Inbound 2. Outbound?

Is it possible to set up 2 SMTP Notes Servers?

One SMTP server for all Inbound mail

and

One SMTP server for all Outbound mail

Both SMTP servers in the same Domain

I can not find any documentation on this.

Please reply if you know anything!

Thanks

Jerry

Sure. Point the inbound mail to the server you want it to come in on (external DNS). As far as outbound is concerned, look up SMTP Routing in the Admin help.

In the server configuration document you can mark what specific domino server will handle outbound SMTP mail.

I have not found the place in the Server document to specifiy a specific outbound SMPT mail server inR6. Can you give me any more info.

I am planning to have an MX Record to point to point to my Inbound SMTP server. I have not figured a way to only use one specific server for outbound SMTP mail? Please tell me where in the Server document. I have looked and will look again.

Thanks

Sure. But it is not in the server document.

Go to the “server CONFIGURATION” document (This is different than the server document). If you are in the domino directory click through Configuration, Servers, Configurations. Either there is none or one for your server or one for all servers.

Within this document click through ROUTER/SMTP, Basics. There you should see a field with text by it stating “Reply host for messaging leavin g the local internet domain”. There you can enter the outbound server name.

I now see the Configuration document, but it never said to put the Notes server
name there only the a host name, domain name, or IP address. Should I use the
Notes servers IP address or the Notes server name?

(I saw this field before, but it was not clear that I could use a Notes server
name)

One more question? I am going to cluster my Inbound SMTP server with my
Outbound SMTP server as a fail over so that my OutBound-SMTP will Fail over to
my Inbound SMTP if my Outbounds SMTP failed. The Inbound-SMPT will have to
route both Inbound and Outbound mail and vice verse. This being the case I need
to set up two of Configuration documents one for the Primary Outbound
(SMTP-Outbound) and another configuration document for my failover SMTP Server
(SMTP-Inbound) I do not see a clear way to fail over the SMTP Mail routing once
I set the configuration documents. Got any thoughts?

I just want to be sure I can fail over to another SMTP server once I create
this Configuration document to send my Outbound Mail to another specified
server. I hoping my cluster configuration will make this work.

Thanks for your Help

A domain name is a valid entry only if the internal DNS contains an MX record
for that domain and can resolve it to a host name.
When entering an IP address, enclose it within square brackets; for example,

The reason you don’t see it is most likely because Domino servers now run SMTP natively and any mail server can send outbound mail without much configuration at all. Not sure why you would want to do restrict this unless you are sending to a non-Domino Gateway, but I am sure there are cases where you need to.

The requirement for our R6.5 upgrade wanted to separate mail Gateways for performance reasons and Failover. That’s it. Nothing more special than that.

Thanks for you information

I brought it to our meeting today

so I am going make it work for them.

I will let you know how it works out

Thanks again
