Is it also possible to alternate linecolours (highest) category by category?

You can select alternating row colors for the view as a whole on the Style tab of the view properties. You can use the “Use value as color” feature to set the colors of individual rows (and, consequently, of categories), but I don’t think it interacts with alternating row colors. To put it another way, you could have alternating row colors or you could have a designated color for a category, but not different sets of alternating colors for different categories.
