I was seraching the net to find the Best Practice to upgrade/install a Domino/Traveler 9… Server in a 8.5.3 Domino pool.
However I did find some info none of the info was complete.
On this Open Mic Webcast http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27038015 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27038015 they say you need to upgrade the domino directory and let it replicate to all servers.
So far so good, but here is my 1st ? don’t you need to update or copy the template for the Domino directory over to the 8.5.3 servers?

Here the word ‘etc’ is not much of a help.
On some other documentation for Domino I find that it is not recomended to run templates higher than the server version.
So please if someone has the steps to perform an side by side installation of domino/traveler 9… with domino 8.5.3 please feel free to update the list you find below.

Install domino 9…

Start Domino 9… and let it perform a design refresh on the Domino Directory (names.nsf)

Copy the Domino Directory template (pupnames.ntf) to the other domino (8.5.3) servers

Perform a design upgrade of the Domino Directory (names.nsf) on those servers
