Translation issue on Blackberry

Hi all,

I’m hoping somebody can help here. We have a weird issue with our Blackberry’s. Whenever anybody sends an internal email thorugh notes and the Blackberry picks it up, it picks up the sends address in the following format “Joe Bloggs/DomainName”@Domain.com.

So when we try to reply on our Blackberry’s it obviously replies to an unknown address and returns an error. If we pick up the internal email in Notes there is no such problem.

I have been looking in the Tranlation settings on our Domino box but can’t seem to find anything untoward there. Can anybody help or at least point me in the right direction to resolve this issue?

Regards…

Karl

Some questions that might help find the cause.

Does your Blackberry server sit in the same Notes domain as your regular mail servers (i.e. does it share the same address book, etc.)?

It should be in the same domain for Blackberry to operate properly. Also, the item you have labelled /DomainName is technically your organisational certifier. The Notes Domain is the bit such as @ACME that appears at the end of internal Notes mail addresses.

Do you operate multiple Notes domains (multiple address books)?

Do you have a Global Domain document defined in Notes? (Or one for each Notes domain you’re operating.)

What are the settings in the SMTP Address Conversion section of this/these document(s)?

Hi Rupert, Thanks for your reply.

We use the Blackberry via Vodafones Mobile Email service so no BES server.

We have one domino mail server and thus one notes domain. Yes we have a global domain document defined. This is where I was looking myself to try to resolve this but to no avail.

The settings in the SMTP address conversion are as follows (I have changed the actual domain names but they are in the same format):

SMTP Address Conversion

Local primary Internet domain: domain1.co.uk

Alternate Internet domain aliases: domain1.co.uk

domain2.com

domain2.co.uk

sub1.domain2.com

sub2.domain2.com

sub3.domain2.com

Internet address lookup:

If disabled or no match, Disabled

convert as follows:

Local part formed from: Short name

Domino domain(s) included: None

Domino domain(s) position: Left of ‘@’

Domino domain separator: . - period

Address example: JMD@acme.com NOTE: The following settings are not used in R5. They only apply to R4.x SMTP MTAs

Outbound mail restriction: Unrestricted

Address format: Address only

Hi again Karl,

Looks like the issue is down to the Vodafone Mobile Email service, specifically how it translates the sender’s and recipient’s Notes addresses.

I’m not familiar with this (just BES configuration), so your best bet may be to call Vodafone support (although I suspect they’re more familiar with Outlook/Exchange configuration, than Notes/Domino).

Your single server/single domain config makes things quite a bit easier to troubleshoot!

When the Blackberry user tries to reply to “Joe Bloggs/DomainName”@Domain.com does the message actually get sent? If so then I’m assuming that your Domino server is receiving these messages but can’t translate the local part of the internet address into something meaningful.

Notes is fairly flexible in terms of address translation, so there’s a good chance of solving it at your end.

Generally, your Global Domain doc looks fine, but I think you might get some benefit from enabling Internet address lookup. This means that Domino will look at the addresses listed in person documents, before trying to generate an address via the short name. I’m not sure, however, that enabling lookups will have much effect on this problem.

As well as all the address lookup and the Global Domain settings, for inbound SMTP mail the router will generally do a case-insensitive match of the local part against anything in the ($Users) view of the Domino directory. It will also try to reinterpret dots and underscores as spaces and see if it can find a match that way. One question here: does the local pat actually contain quotation marks? If so then I think Domino will ignore it.

Cheers,

Rupert

No, when the blackberry user replies to “Joe Bloggs/DomainName”@Domain.com and error gets returned. With the exception of Joe Bloggs and the name of the domains - “Joe Bloggs/DomainName”@Domain.com - is exactly as it appears on the from address on the Blackberry, including the quotation marks.

I’m pretty sure I never had this issue a few months back but I can’t think of anything that has changed on Domino apart from when we installed a new Spam provider meaning I had to change some smtp settings (like what IP addresss it would allow to relay to).

I’ll try your suggestion of internet address lookup and then give Vodafone a call.

Thanks for your suggestions and help. Regards… Karl

Hi Karl,

How does mail get from Notes mail file of the recipient (who’s out of the office) to Vodafone Mobile Email? Presumably there’s some sort of agent that runs and forwards all mail to some aliased address at Vodafone (e.g. jbloggs@mycompany.mobileemail.vodafone.net)? Or does Vodafone use web access to your mail server to monitor new mail delivery?

Sounds like you’re saying that your outbound SMTP mail is relayed through an anti-spam provider (e.g. MessageLabs). Is that the case, or is it just inbound mail that goes via the relay?

If it looks like messages are being forwarded on to Vodafone via SMTP, then it would be good to capture the message content in transit to see where the mangled address gets added (on your Domino server, at your spam filtering provider, at Vodafone).

You can use the setting SET CONFIG LOG_MAILROUTING=40 at the Domino server console to turn on verbose logging of all router traffic. You need to restart the ROUTER task to get this to take effect. Once you have captured enough traffic to show an outbound SMTP session for a Blackberry message, you can use SET CONFIG LOG_MAILROUTING to remove this entry from Notes.ini and set it back to normal. (Restart the ROUTER again).

Let me know how you get on.

Rupert

Hi Rupert,

We have an account we can log onto via the web. Basically it looks at our webmail account details and pulls the info from there. I don’t think it actually forwards mails to the blackberry. it just polls the main notes webmail account and copies the mail to its account and then marks it to be put onto the blackberry. I can’t see any activity on MailMarshal if it was forwarding mails from notes to vodafones mobile email anyway.

I turned on the MAILROUTING setting but again can’t see anything going from notes to the vodafone account (looking at the server console, maybe i should be looking elsewhere?).

Karl,

Seems pretty clear from what you’ve said that the Vodafone Mobile Email service is polling your users’ mail files via web access to your mail server. Therefore, most of the work of translating the message details for delivery to the Blackberry is done on the Vodafone end of things.

I think you’re going to have to take it up with them. If the translation was working before, and has now changed that could be caused by something like a server upgrade or mail template change, but it could equally be a change at their end.

In the meantime, you might as well turn off the server-side logging! You should have noticed that this setting produced much more detailed logs, but that won’t help if the delivery to the Blackberry doesn’t involve routing through your server.

It’d be good to hear what the solution is – when you find one.

Rupert

Good Morning Rupert,

Thanks again for your help. How do I get the detailed logging back off? The command you listed doesn’t seem to work.

I shall update this post when I get an answer from Vodafone.

Hi Karl,

That command should have been

SET CONFIG LOG_MAILROUTING=

If there’s nothing after the = sign, Domino removes the entry from Notes.ini. Then the following commands will reload the Router task.

TELL ROUTER QUIT

and once Domino tells you the task has ended,

LOAD ROUTER

If all of that doesn’t work, the last resort is to quit the Domino server temporarily (QUIT or EXIT) and edit the server’s Notes.ini file to remove the line beginning LOG_MAILROUTING=

Make sure there’s a blank line at the end of the file, though.

Then you can restart the Domino server service.

Cheers,

Rupert

Got the reason it gives me the error:

http://www.blackberry.com/knowledgecenterpublic/livelink.exe/fetch/2000/8021/270925/Support_-_Messages_retrieved_from_an_integrated_iNotes_account_does_not_display_correct_Sent_From_address.html?nodeid=701734&vernum=0

The shortened version is: “The iNotes mail template must include a valid SMTP address for all messages received, including internal corporate mail.”

Does anybody know how I can do this? Bear in mind I’m using Domino 6.5.
