I’m seeing some strange behaviour with the calendar, and it is making it difficult to predict the results.
Note I am in the UK so my OS timezone is British Summer Time (BST), Notes client set to observe OS settings.
- First thing is I created an appointment for a conference call that is happening with colleagues in the US. It is happening at 18:00 BST (10:00am PST) on Monday 28th July.
So I create the appointment and select 18:00 to 19:00. I then click the “Specify a different time zone” option and the time zone fields appear.
If I change the time zone to PST for both then the local time option is set to 02:00-03:00 on Tuesday 29th July. In effect the local time has been advanced 8 hours to 2am the following morning.
When in the calendar view, doing the mouse over the appointment shows the time as 18:00-19:00.
This to me is totally wrong. If I am in the UK and I specify the time as 18:00-19:00 and select an alternative time zone then the outcome should be to display the alternate time in the field labelled local time, in this case as 8 hrs earlier.
The way it currently works is I have to create an appointment with the main time being the time that my colleagues in the US will be attending just to display correctly in my calendar. I’d be interested to know if the same applies in reverse, i.e. If you’re a US user and are trying to set time zones for BST.
- OK, so I’ve inserted a contrived document to get my calendar to display properly.
Now I want to create a new appointment, perhaps we’ve sheduled another call for the same time the following day. If I use copy into New calendar entry then all works OK.
However if I use copy and paste then the times are off-set by 8 hrs in the wrong direction exactly as I discussed in the section above.
In effect the copied document takes the source times from one zone but the paste operation applies the time zone information during the write.
I don’t know how or why it does this, but either way the result should be the same not different for both methods.
- I set my preferences File->Preferences->User Preferences - International - Calendar to display an additional time zone.
This only displays in the day view not week/month views. This is unhelpful, since I never use the day only views.
Thanks for your comments
