The specified network name is no longer available

Hi everyone,

“The specified network name is no longer available”

This error message is becoming the bane of my existence. It has started appearing on a regular basis recently. It continually pops up with everything I click on (folder, email, etc) - then when I try to close Notes I continually get message boxes saying either this message, or that I can’t close Notes because a dialog is active, so I eventually have to use Task Manager to kill the application - finally I can relaunch Notes and everything is fine.

Any ideas as to what causes this message and why it has started happening regularly?

thanks,

Dan

What type of network are you running this on? TCP/IP on an Windows Server 2000? Do you have Notes installed with the user data directory on a File Server?

We are running a Windows 2000 environment with the user’s data directory installed on a File Server (i.e. program installed to c:\Notes and p:\Notes for data… we use this method so that users can float from office to office and maintain their desktop file.)

Another entry in this forum mentions speed/connectivity issues with the Network. This is what I believe has been the problem all along with our situation…we go for a long time and no one complains, then all of a sudden, the problems begin to show up.

If anyone else has any suggestions they are greatly appreciated.

Yes, you’ve explained the scenario to a T.

I found this in the event log of my pc:

Event ID: 50

Source: MrxSmb

{Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer file data from buffers to \Device\LanmanRedirector. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file.

Doing some searching on this yielded a couple of interesting things:

I haven’t requested the fix mentioned in the first link there, but the workaround I already had implemented so obviously that won’t help. The second one is more generic tblshooting stuff. I downloaded a new NIC driver, and forced it to 100Mb/Full Duplex instead of Auto - but the problem is still occuring to me 5-6 times per day.

I don’t know if my card is going, switch is going, or just what the source of this pain is. Thankfully, no-one else has been having this problem, and I’m in IT, so that keeps the problem quiet

Please keep me updated on any answers you dig up.

Subject: An odd solution…but it works

I experienced the identical errors, shortly after retiring an old Domino Server.

All WAN connections, NIC settings, etc. checked out AOK.

What ultimately corrected this, was to simply remove the affected user’s mail icon, then re-add it. Simple…but it worked.
