The Database is currently in use by you or another user

Hi All,

I know this has been posted many times… but i think mine is a little unique. I have searched forums for the fix but none have seem to do the trick.

We keep having the same user receiving the error message “The Database is currently in use by you or another user” when trying to open his mailbox on the server.

Now this particular user has been experiencing the same issue for quite some time. All other users on the same mail server don’t experience this issue.

Just to give a quick config snapshot of the mail server’s mail directoy. There are 2 physical drives. D:\ and a F:. D:\ is the primary directory for all mail files. There are 20 users who have there physical mail files setup as DIRLINKS on the F:\ drive, due to space running out on the D:. He happens to be one of the users.

Now his physical mail file which is on the F:\ has a numeric 1 at the end of his mail file name whereas his dirlink mailfile name on the D:\ which is 1k in size hasn’t. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but thought I’d mention it.

We are running backup exec with no open mail file agent.

His mailbox is shared by his PA and assures me that his PA does not have the mail file open after working hours.

I’m 100% sure that t is the backup that keeps locking up his mail file but don’t understand why it keeps happening to him many times. And to temporarily fix this I open up the Process Explorer tool on the the Windows Server (Domino) search for user’s handle or in this case his mailfile.nsf and terminate it. Soon after, his notes is back in business. Couple of weeks later it happens again.

User’s mail file size is 7.5GB.

Mail template: 6.5.4

Mail Server: 7.0.1

Server runs nightly compact -B -S 5 mail\ Tue - Fri 4:00AM each day.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

John.

OK here goes…

Most likely reason going by what you above. The nightly backup is locking the DB as opened. This is because the OPEN file agent is not running. or There might be a AV product set to scan the file.

Database link - as long as mail is being delivered and the user can connect to the DB via notes (ie through the server) then there isn’t much more that can go wrong.

what does a DBCACHE FLUSH do to the issue? does it resolve it? rather than having to delete the lock file.

Hi Nathan,

I tried dbcache flush but didn’t work. The only way unlock it was to lauch up the Process Explorer tool on the the Windows Server search for user’s handle or mailfile name and terminate it.

We will be looking into the open file agent for backup exec very shortly.
