Sync to iPhone

With all the buzz around Apple’s new iPhone, does anyone have any info on sync up of Notes calendar, e-mails, contacts and address book, to-do’s, notes journals with this new device?

Third party working on it?

Maybe IBM has talk to Apple about it? EsaySync for iPhone?

It’s really more about syncing Notes to the Mac, not the iPhone. There are some articles out there on exporting Notes contacts to the Mac as well as using iCal for the calendar. You’re right that this is a great opportunity for someone to write a 3rd party tool.Even at $19.99/shareware you could make some serious money.

Anyone at OpenNTF interested?

That’s a workaround, but what if you don’t use Mac? Most people still use PCs.

Oops, I mean that the sync is to the iTunes software, not the Mac/PC.

iTunes has calendar and address book sync for PCs? I was under the impression that Apple made new lease of iTunes to only sync up iCal and Mac address book which are available in Mac OS only.

Generally, on the mac side, iSync would take care of the iPhone. But of course iTunes and other app could use the iSync frameworks.

About the Notes ( pc/mac ) to iPhone side, I guess we are depended of tools like a upgraded Missing sync.

Luckily is the iPhone Os, like the mac osx. So it would easy to build apps, if of course we do get iPhone frameworks available.

Any way, wait till the wwdc opening is finished today. There should be more info to discus about.

Have you tried Martin Scott’s plug in for Lotus Notes that allows wireless access to your email on a Blackberry, Palm or Windows Mobile device? It’s a plug in that works in Notes and doesn’t require software on your handheld to function. It just might work with the iPhone, but the results will need to be tested.

Here’s a link to their site: http://www.martinscott.com

I’ve been using it for a few weeks with my Blackberry and it seems to work well.

What would be the advantage of using the martinscott solution for Blackberry vs. setting up the BIS server to get the mail via IMAP (assuming you’re trying to avoid having to install BES)? In either case you’re only getting email and don’t get contacts, etc…

Disclaimer - I haven’t actually used or installed the martinscott solution and the above is an actually question and not just trying to be cheeky.

That is a good question.

Here are the advantages of MartinScott WirelessMail over using BIS with IMAP (assuming you have that option… many orgs disable IMAP for security reasons).

  • IMAP pulls down ALL messages; WirelessMail transfers all messages, or only those you want according to several whitelist rules. If you get a lot of email that you don’t need to read on your mobile, this can reduce clutter in your handheld inbox.

  • IMAP cannot retrieve old messages; with WirelessMail, you can send yourself an email from the handheld with a full text query in the subject line, and it will return (ie resend) matching messages.

  • IMAP deletions on the handheld are deleted from Notes. WirelessMail lets you keep the email in Notes, even if you delete it on the handheld. Of course, if you keep a clean Inbox, you might actually prefer the deletion sync.

  • WirelessMail gives you several calendar features to the handheld. 1) daily summary email of the day’s calendar events 2) reminder emails before meetings 3) you can send yourself an email with wm.cal in the subject, and it will reply with the next week’s calendar events. Specify wm.cal date1 date2 to cover a range.
