How about providing the capability of inserting emoticons in e-mails (and calendar descriptions) as is currently possible in sametime chats?
Subject: Agreed, I have these “Emoticons in the toolbar for emails” in my list
HiI have a list of things that I’d like to get more similar between Notes and sametime, one of which is the “text editing” toolbar.
I’d like them both to have the button to insert emoticons (and the ability to add emoticons from mail or achat to the SAME emoticon palette)
I must be honest, I do not think this is very high up on the list, even tho it is clearly a good product integratoin thing to do.
Subject: really?
okay, just to play devil’s advocate a bit.
This is a business level mail/server environment. Are graphical emoticons really something that should be offered up in an email context (IM is different, for a multitude of reasons).
I can see the point of trying to minimize interface differences, although the two mediums have different purposes. Shouldn’t adding the editing options that make formatting IMs easier to e-mails be a better goal than emoticons? How about the foreground color, return to default, or hyperlink? I realize that some of these have keyboard shortcuts. These things at least have strong use case with the intended product userbase.
Now, while I disagree w/ the emoticon button being there, at the end of the day I don’t care as long as the more useful stuff is there first.
Subject: while I have never realy missed it, there seams to be an urgend need for games in the XP Prof, too…
There was a time with such discussions on the need/use of the Mouse, on the use of colors of screens and a lot of other things more. None of these convinced 100% of all people, when invended, and ofen enough only very few folks where actually waiting for this. Still the lack of them would after some time clearly demonstrate an outdated system. From this perspective, Emoticons in Notes should actually move up that list quite a bit even though - ending with the same statement I did start with- I have never realy missed them.
Subject: really - yes
I would like to see that added functionality as well and the addition of the emoticons would be helpful. I’ve seen a lot of quick e-mails that include text emoticons that don’t convey the same emotions. I’ve also seen a lot of e-mails that have been taken the wrong way which could have been resolved by the addition of an emoticon.
The problem with e-mails is there is no emotion so the receiver reads into it what they want at the moment for good or bad. The addition of an emoticon could change that by encouraging the reader to better understand the frame of mind of the sender.
just my $0.01 (not sure it is worth $0.02)

point taken about people feelings, although i still feel that emoticons are inappropriate for work documents, which is what e-mails are. They are retained and stored as reference and proof materials.
anyways, not the point, I concede that it was fine to add it if the other functionality is added as well. To me it would make the most sense to develop a completely sharable text bar instead of maintaining separate code bases.
