Spam List

Is there a list of suggested SPAM document rules that can be copied into the RULES section of the Domino Configuration Document?I have some rules set already but was wondering if Lotus somewhere has some recommended settings, I would refine them from there.

I haven’t seen anything. To be honest after 8 weeks I haven’t found the rules for spam prevention to useful.

Just getting to many false positives for my liking. I end up stopping maybe a dozen that get past my DNS blacklist filters but also stop another dozen normal ones (like enews letters, jokes, internal messages, etc). And still maybe another dozen get through which the limited rules just can’t cope with.

Have you tried SpamSentinel? It works really well at stopping all Spam. If Spam gets through then you black list it and it won’t come through again. I have seen great results from it. You can use it for yourself or on a server.

I agree with Paul that the most effective way to block SPAM is to use the DNS blacklist filters. I have been implementing the following DNS Blacklist fiters:

bl.spamcop.net; dun.dnsrbl.net; opm.blitzed.org; spam.dnsrbl.net; relays.ordb.org

The most effective (by far) is bl.spamcop.net.

I have created a Excel Spreesheet with the list of Mail Rules I have created for our system. Normally I use the action “Move To Database” and have created a SPAM database from the mail template as the database that acts as my SPAM repository. I then review this database daily. If wish I could attach the Excel spreedsheet to this e-mail. If you would like a copy, send me an e-mail I will send it to you.

It sounds like you have found a good solution. I have also found something that works really well. Have you tried SpamSentinel? It is a little bit more effecient becasue all you have to do is click one button and then the Spam is gone. You should take a look at it!

Our company developed a product called clearmail that is white list based. Something you can not do with rules.

check us out:

http://www.corriganinc.com/clearmail

DNS Blacklist features of Domino 6 in conjunction with a white list has eliminated the spam issue for us and our clients and we do not worry about false positives because E-Mail is not getting blocked, just re-routed to a spam folder.

Subject: RE: Spam List

We use 2 layers of defense: RBL(bl.spamcop.net and sbl.spamhaus.org) and also McAfee GroupShield.

Concerning RBLs, it was recommended at Lotusphere that for large or busy mail servers you keep the number of blacklist servers to 2.

What I like about GroupShield (aside from stopping viruses) is that it allows me to use basic word lists to stop VERY offensive words.

Also, if you’re concerned with false positives from the RBLs; we found that spam is definitely more of a problem for some users than others. So we simply flag blacklisted messages, and then use an agent in the mail file to process the flagged messages according to the users preference. This allows heavily spammed users to delete the junk because they are more tolerant of false-positives; but other users can just move it to a folder.

I use to arm wrestle with the rules as well. I finally bought SpamSentinel and it has worked awesome. You should take a look at it!
