Some 'slow' clients, some 'normal' clients?

Apologies if this has been covered before but I have searched here and other news groups but still haven’t come up with any answers.

Users had no issues while running Notes / Domino 5.08. After upgrading to 6.5,

‘slowness’ appeared on some clients, getting issues like “Network operation did not complete in a reasonable amount of time, please retry.”.

Annoyingly, I sometimes experience the issues myself, only some days not every day.

I am monitoring the server from my desktop using the Domino Console at the same time and I note that if I send an E-Mail, the server indicates that it is sent immediately but the client can freeze for up to 5 minutes as described. In other words, although my desktop is slowed down, I can continue to use other

applications and they aren’t experiencing similar issues at the same time.

I’ve reinstalled some of the affected clients (I would say that about 10% of our organisation has been affected since our upgrade) and these clients are (all but two)on different hubs on our network.

My thinking is that there are network issues but as the symptoms only started after the upgrade, I also swing towards Lotus Notus / Domino.

I have started to restart the Domino server regularly (every other day approx.) and reboot the machine once a week - no difference other than moving the symptoms to my desktop (as if moving the symptoms from one user to another)! I have upgraded all clients and server to 6.5.1 - no change.

Hoping someone can give me some tweaks to try…I’ve tried deleting cache.ndk and bookmark.nsf and network compression is disabled for LAN.

Some client slowness can be attributed to old video drivers – make sure the users’ machines have an up-to-date driver for their video cards. ND 6+ uses a different method to draw the screen, and if the driver doesn’t support direct calls to the new methods, Windows has to go through some hoops to translate.

I’ve seen some cases with Notes Clients having performance problems on specific client builds, might be worth speaking to Lotus/IBM support to see if they have any known issues with the machines you are using…

Any luck? I’ve just started experiencing the same thing with one user (6.51). I haven’t heard if there are others. Was working fine and now occasionally it just hangs with no response for 2 or 3 minutes and the we see the message. Have rebuilt the PC (complete format due to some other issues), removed and installed the client, no error messages I can find, server is not busy and the client PC is not busy. Problem occurred for user on a different PC while I was working on the other. Will delete the client’s mailbox and build a new one today. I restart Domino daily and run compacts nightly. If that isn’t it, is looking like it has to be the server (verson 6.5 on an iSeries) since I have just seen it on my PC after clicking refresh in the mailbox. Seemed like the PC and server just stop communicating. Message was - The network operation did not complete in a reasonable amount of time please try again.

Dennis, apologies for not getting back sooner, just noticed your message.Yes, my problem clients are now resolved. I did this by producing a local replica so instead of the client running with the mailbox on the server, it is running on the local replica. I have replication set to every 10 minutes and I have experienced no issues since.

I only had the issues with about 10% of clients so I have changed these and left the rest as they were.

Hope this helps - if you want any more information leave another response and I will provide fuller details of what I did.

Best of luck.

Hi Ray

We have the same issue here with the most of our Clients (6.5.1, W2k, SP4) when connecting to the Server (6.5.2, w2k, sp4)

Have you get more information about the issue?
