I have an international domain with several SMTP gateways. There has always been an issue with routing outbound internet mail so if you have something similar I’d like to hear your views.
Our hub servers should be in one Notes Network and route outbound mail to a “local” Domino server which is either an SMTP server (and in a DMZ) or routes mail on to an SMTP server. So for example the Singapore mail server should send to the Singapore hub server which should route it on to the Singapore SMTP server.
With SMTP Foreign domains and SMTP connection documents this doesn’t work as needed. When outbound internet mail reaches the Singapore hub it may route out through the UK SMTP gateway. This is because the Notes Network of hubs means a zero routing cost between them, so the router is as likely to choose the UK hub server as any other.
At the moment, the hub servers are not in the same Notes Network because of this. But they should be for resilience and simplicity of routing.
I am thinking about removing the SMTP Foreign Domains and SMTP connections and using different configuration documents in each region to define the local SMTP relay hosts. But I am not sure if this will help. I wonder if the relay host definition is the same as a connection document in terms of routing cost? Would the Singapore hub server still send the internet message out to any of the relay hosts?
Thanks, Ian
