Mostly as a result of following threads in this forum, I have successfully setup a SmartUpgrade to take desktop clients from 6.5 to 6.5.1.
Before I go for a mass deployment, I have one annoyance that I’d appreciate assistance with.
I am using the 20MB patch as opposed to the 80MB full upgrade. During the process, the install asks to be pointed to the original CD in order to locate the file Lotus Notes 6.5.msi.
Is there any way that I can set this up so that the users don’t have to try to locate the file themselves? If not, can I put just this file on the network and tell users in the readme where to point to?
Subject: SmartUpgrade 6.5 to 6.5.1 - requirement for CD during install?
This usually occurs when the Windows Installer Service (WIS) cannot locate the original MSI package that was used to install the product. Normally, the WIS caches a copy of the MSI file used under \Windows\Installer. For some reason, WIS is unable to find your cached copy and therefore is prompting you back to where it last read the package from, your CD. It may be that the MSI file was never properly cached (low disk space on the Windows drive? or the file was deleted)
The location of the cached copy is stored in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products<Product Code>\InstallProperties\LocalPackage where is version specific UID. For 6.5 the Product Code for the AllClients kit was 3C494FAF1DA04C1D91424B0FCAE342C7
and the Notes only kit was 32CCF5D630F7457093A42B897ADDB22B
The other interesting registry key is LocalSource, which is where the WIS will look for the package if it can’t be found in the cache.
To solve this problem you may have to update the registry to point LocalSource to the network location of the MSI file. I don’t think you can use a command line property to override the location, but you might be able to.
Oddly enough, there’s a blog entry on Microsoft’s MSDN site about this exact problem but for Office 2k3.

Hi,
I’m also implementing Smart Upgrade for 6.5 to 6.5.1 (see posting earler today).
Are you using c55dzna.exe? I have not succeded to run it automatically from Smart Upgrade. Would therefore appreciate if you posted the exact fields you have setup in the Smart Upgrade Kit.
Running it outside Notes (directly), does it prompt for the msi-file then? This works fine with me.
Regards,
Robert

It took me a while but I have it working apart from niggles.
I’m using c55dyna.exe.
Looking back through past posts I found that I have had to set the fields in the kit as follows:
Kit Description: 6.5 to 6.5.1 Patch Kit
Enable this kit for use: checked
Source version: Release 6.5
Operating System: Windows/32
Localization: English
Destination version: Release V6.5.1 (THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THERE IS A KNOWN BUG AND THE “V” IS ESSENTIAL)
Restart Notes after update: checked
Location: Attached to this note selected
I attached c55dyna.exe
Then in the message text at the bottom, I have a note to users…when they get to the splash screen there is a “Read me first” button and it’s this text that they see.
I haven’t tried a manual run of c55dyna.exe but as the install progresses on a client desktop, the user is prompted a number of times to say Upgrade or Next and then the user arrived at the screen asking for the 6.5 CD or location of the Lotus Notes 6.5.msi file. I’d prefer that the user didn’t have to look for this if possible.
If you need any more info about the master policy / desktop policy, just say and I’m happy to post their details as well.
Good luck!!

FYI, I am using the file named, “c55dxna.exe”. My file is approx 107 MB. I have my users pull the update from a file share, rather than attaching it.

Thanks…I chose only the Patch (c55dyna.exe) for the upgrade kit as it is a lot smaller and my desktop users don’t need to upgrade Admin or Designer applications.
When I get to the CD prompt, the number 1 is in the field…if only I could get this pointed to the network so that users have nothing to think about, I’d be very happy…
