Smart Upgrade - Privileges at the client PC to upgrade?

Hello everyone -When using the Smart Upgrade kits, I have found if you follow all instuctions, it does do a very good job.

Here is our situation - When using the kit options to specify a UNC path to the shared installation code location, client side privileges get complicated.

When you send the Kits to any user who is not logged into the Windows Network as an “Administrator” equivalent, the smart upgrade does not work correctly. First, the user gets the prompt, the say “Upgrade Now”. The client shuts down, and then immediately starts back up, and never performs an upgrade. The complex part is that the user is a local Administrator on their personal PC, and it still does this. If the user is made an “Administrator” in the Windows Domain, they the process works perfectly.

So, it appears the MSI Installer program is using the Network Privileges to determine what the installer can do, vs. the local PC privileges? We are very clear on how Windows security works, so does anyone have any comments on how the force the installer to check those local privileges?

Thanks.

Subject: Smart Upgrade - Privileges at the client PC to upgrade?

Bummer. I don’t have any answers but will share my experience.

We are using SmartUpgrade to take users from 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 to 6.5.1. Our Domain Users group is member of the local Administrators group on every PC, but the users certainly DO NOT have admin priviledges on our domain. I have specified a UNC path in the SmartUpgrade that points to the exe file where users have read-only access.

So, I’m not sure what you’re up against with this problem; however, my users are upgrading fine and don’t have administrative rights on the domain.

Good luck and feel free to post further questeions about our environment.
