Slow Mail Replication with large numbers of Updates

We have recently had a number of users report that their mail is very slow first thing in the morning when they log in. When you look at what their Client is doing it appears that there are thousands of updates every day but these users are not receiving thousands of emails during the night. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can troubleshoot this?

Check their log. Is it a large number of updates for mail db, or for other db’s? If mail, then check nightly agent activity in their mail file (just a thought).

I checked the logs for the users that are complaining. It only happens on certain days and it is the MDC.nsf file. On these days the replication is moving anywhere from 6 to 10 mb whereas on most days it is less than a 1mb. I can’t think of any agents that might cause this and also I would think any agents running on the server would effect all my users instead of just three or four.

It soundslike all the docs in the DB are being updated by some process. Nothing might change except the access date which causes them to replicate again. There have been some good insights poted so far, AV or a server side agent might be doing it. Usually things like this are caused by something you have done or someone has done.

You should look at the document properties of a document on the day when it happens and see if the last access date is teh day before or earlier.

Don’t forget to check other servers for new software such as AV since this is a replication issue.

Hi Gareth, there is a way to see what has been going on in this specific mail file. You can use the replication audior in scanEZ to see everything that has changed in a database from a given date. Profile documents, documents and design elements.

Although this function is not available in the free version so it will cost you 10 dollars to rent the tool. you will find more info on Replication Auditor in scanEZ | Ytria's Online Help Center - EZ Suite for IBM Notes and Domino I do not work for them but they have saved my a* so many times now so I can truly recommend it. I hope this helps you. Tracy

Soounds like a template refresh is occurring.Possibly they have it verifying all emails or did you install a new anti-virus/spam 3rd party control?

there is a way to set the log to verbose mode and track further info.
