Any ideas what would cause a Notes (14.0) client to crash/close with a single click or double-click on an email in the $Inbox? This occurs with a particular message (no attachments) or odd characters, etc.
I would recommend using the latest version of Notes 14.0FP2. There are several crash fix added to it since 14.0.

If you continue to have the crash, I would recommend creating a support ticket to further investigate. Possible something wrong with that specific email.

For initial troubleshooting kindly do the following below:
1. Rename workspace folder
2. Delete Cache.ndk
If issue still occurs, Kindly upgrade to latest version of Notes 14.0 FP2.

As mentioned the crash occurs on a particular message only. It might be a possible issue with that specific message only. Please check if other users are also experiencing client crashes on that particular email.
Please upgrade Notes Client to 14.0 FP2 and check if the crash issue is observed.
If still facing issues, please raise a support case and share the NSD at the time of issue on the case to check further.
