Is there any way to change the size of those icons (mail, calendar, to-do, etc.) on the left side bar. They are too small and don’t have sufficient contract for be to be able to see them without a magnifying glass.

File/Preferences/User preferences/Bookmark icon size => Medium or Large
In Notes 8: File/Preferences/windows & themes, check “use large icons in the open list”
(or right-click the icon bar and check “use large icons”).
