Just as an FYI in case folks missed it – there’s an article in today’s online Wall Street Journal “Computer Security Code Raises Red Flag” that talks about some possible issues with the SHA-1 and other hash algorithms. They do mention that using more than one hash algorithm is better. I guess it’s a good reminder that we’re never as “safe” as we think we are behind the wall of encryption and that multiple layers of security are best.
Schneier is quoted on the WSJ article. He and others do say that the chances of a hack are remote. But the article does also mention that several companies including RSA have been thinking about phasing out SHA-1. Just food for thought.
