Search bar appears to be a step backward

  • Used to be I could click an icon and pop open an area that would allow me to search, with options; click that same icon and the search panel would disappear - search only present when I wanted it and not wasting screen space when I didn’t want it. That no longer appears to be possible with R8.5 … my ONLY apparent recourse is to enable the “search bar”, enter my search, and THEN the familiar “Search for” appears with the options.- So the search bar MUST be visible in order to search. This is a massive step backwards, forcing some screen-wasting search bar to be present at all times in order to be able to search at all. Where’s the old (nicely tiny) icon to open the “Search for” panel?? I’ve looked all over Toolbar customize and it seems to be AWOL.

  • Search bars are All The Rage, but that doesn’t mean everyone wants them, nor does it mean that previously existing and perfectly usable functionality should be destroyed in order to jump on the Search Bar Bandwagon.

  • I’d greatly appreciate having the R7/6/5/4 search behaviour back again.

  • I searched the forum for indications on getting this to work like it used to, but found nothing. It’s entirely possible I missed it, in which case I apologize.

  • Thanks for your time…

Subject: Search This View

Do you mean the “Search this View” menu item from the View menu (to just show the search bar). The toolbar icon was trimmed out. Assuming you mean this functionality, we’ll take this as a vote to put it back in.

Also available from the search pull down (to just show the bar and not actually “do a search”

Subject: That is it!..

  • It obviously didn’t occur to me to look under the View menu for search.- While I would vote for the icon to be available for customization (not necessarily visible by default) so I can get here in one click instead of two, the fact that I CAN get here without the search bar being visible is quite excellent.

  • THANKS!..
