Running multiple clients - 6.5.x and 7 beta?

I’m currently running multiple Notes Clients:R5.something

6.0.2CF1

and

6.5

and I can run them all at the same time, due to some creativity during the install (which was not that easy) involving regedit, using different pathes and notes.exe for 6.0.2

C:\Notes65\nlnotes.exe =c:\Notes65\notes.ini

for 6.5

Here are some useful references:

My question is this: Is anyone successfully running 6.5.x and 7 beta clients on XP at the same time?

I love the fact that I can switch from my 6.5 client to my 6.0.2 client when it gets tied up doing something.

I’d like to try to setup a similar arrangement for 6.5.x and 7 beta, but am concerned about really messing things up in the process.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

I would like to recommend to add this thread to your collection of simultaneous Notes Client runnings:http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd6forum.nsf/55c38d716d632d9b8525689b005ba1c0/22c9595a0fc8db7885256f8d005a40a6?OpenDocument

I’m running occasionally R5+R6+R7 on same XP machine without bigger problems. Sometimes there’s some non-standard crashes, but restarting the corresponding Notes Client fixes it again.

Thanks for the tip, this way sounds much easier than what I did. I’ll give it a try.

So you think by renaming the directory, the registry doesn’t find what it is trying to point to?

Yes, indeed. I tried changing registry settings before, and it was a tremendous task to find all relevances with regedit, and in the end it didn’t even work. The new Notes install still found the old Notes Client and deleted it. So I tried just to rename the directory of the old Notes Client, and voila! it worked like a charm - the new Notes Client didn’t delete or touch it in any way anymore.I also made 2 batch files, one for moving all notes clients into a subdirectory to hide them, and one to move them back to use them.

It’s as simple as this:

Use both batch files from your Lotus root directory, for example C:\Lotus

prepareinstall.cmd:

md HideNotes

move Notes5013 HideNotes

move Notes602 HideNotes

move Notes654 HideNotes

move Notes7Beta4 HideNotes

Now you can install any notes client.

And once you're done, restore all notes clients back so you use them simultaneously:

useallnotes.cmd:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
move HideNotes\Notes5013 .
move HideNotes\Notes602 .
move HideNotes\Notes654 .
move HideNotes\Notes7Beta4 .
I hope you got the idea.
Notes 7.0 Beta and Notes 6.x coexistence
Do not install both Lotus Notes 7 and Lotus Notes 6.x on the same machine. Instead, upgrade Lotus Notes 6.x to Lotus Notes 7. If you need to install both Lotus Notes 7 and 6.x on the same machine, be aware that this installation could have adverse effects on the operation of the 6.x Client that was previously installed, for example, OLE/COM settings will point to the Notes 7 directory, default email client settings, etc. With that understanding, follow the steps below to install Notes 7 on a machine that also has 6.x installed:
Note: You must have local administrator privileges to complete this procedure. These instructions apply to single user installs only: they do not apply to multi-user client installs.
Shut down the Notes client and all Notes-related tools, utilities and add-ins running on your computer.
Rename the Notes 6.x directory. Notes 6.x is typically installed to \Program Files\Lotus\Notes on Windows. For example, you could rename the directory “Notes6.”
Rename the entire Notes registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Lotus\Notes. For example, you can rename it HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Lotus\Notes6
Rename the entire Installer registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lotus\Notes\Installer. For example, you can rename it HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lotus\Notes\Installer6
Run the Notes 7 install program (SETUP.EXE). Select new locations for the program and data directories. For example, you can select \Program Files\Lotus\Notes7 and \Program Files\Lotus\Notes7\Data
During the install you may see an error message "“Error 1905.Module c:\program files\lotus\notes\nlsxbe.dll failed to unregister. HRESULT”. Click OK and installation will proceeed.
When the install program has finished, rename the 6.x directory back to the original directory name, for example, \Program Files\Lotus\Notes)
