Subject: Running Domino on W2Kserver or Professional ?
I’m running a domino server (R6) on a Win2000 Professional SP2 (client) box. Never had any problems with it, and I’ve got it running for several years now (first R5 now R6).It’s not supported by Lotus though … If you want to have support, you’re bound to Win2000 server
installation and configuration is identical as if it were a Win2000-server … no tricks or pittfalls …
It serves as application, mail and webserver on the same machine and it’s rock stable

Are you using NTFS or FAT on your drives ?
What is your installation paths. c:\program files or d:\domino … and so on …

I have problems with Domino server service hunging (have to run server in application mode) and can not get notes to route traffic right. I have 3 NIC in the server one for Cluster, WAN and LAN. I think it is becouse I run it on a W2KP and not a W2KS.
Subject: RE: Running Domino on W2Kserver or Professional ?
mmm … possible. I don’t have much experience with multiple NIC’s.However, it seems to me that it shouldn’t be a problem …
I’m running a very simple configuration here, if I would use clustering, I would go for the supported OS’s.
Subject: RE: Running Domino on W2Kserver or Professional ?
Just make sure you don’t have more than one NIC on the same network segment… It can’t be done in Windows.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with the “hanging” service on a Win2000-server. It was caused because I installed notes to the “Program files\notes…” directory. The problem was with the space between “Program files”. Maybe its the same one. There has been a technote about this issue but I cant find it anymore. :-((
However the solution was eighter to install notes to a directory without “special characters” or to use the registry editor and change the values for the service entry in such a way that instead of “Program files” it says "Progra~1". (Hope this is understandable)
Maybe it helps.
Bye
PS: I have read somewhere that according to Microsoft licence agreement it is forbidden to run “server software” (like a Domino server) on a Win2000-Workstation. You have to use a Win2000-server.
I for myself cant confirm if it is true or not but you should check that if you intend to run the server on a Win2000-Professional
Subject: RE: Running Domino on W2Kserver or Professional ?
Microsoft do not have any restrictions on that.
The only thing may be pure technical.
W2K Professional only admits 10 incoming connections …
Subject: RE: Running Domino on W2Kserver or Professional ?
Perhaps, but the Domino server doesn’t use the Windows authentification system.
So if you have 100 folks connecting to the Domino server, to Windows it’s like there’s no user connection at all. There’s just one application sending and receiving some packets
Subject: RE: Running Domino on W2Kserver or Professional ?
Can not be that. I have all servers
installed under d:\Domino
Nothing on c:

I upgraded our domino 6.0.1 server from Win NT4 server to Win 2000 pro SP3 (not win 2k server) this past week. So far, no problems at all, and some of the problems we had with name resolutions under win nt seem to be gone.
The only negative I have noticed is increased memory usage by the OS - maybe an extra 20 percent.
The limit of 10 connections for win 2k pro that many people mention does not seem to have anything to do with notes client connections to domino. We have 45 users connecting without an issue.
I do not know at this point if we will have a problem with more than 10 remote users accessing their email via a browser. Hope not and sorta doubt it. My impression is that win 2k is counting the SMB-based connections where you share files or printers on a windows host. Maybe someone reading this thread knows the exact reason.
In any event, it would be a bit risky for MS to try to enforce such a limit on domino connections. Many people have told me it is simple to move domino to linux, and they report it is just as stable on linux. It’s amazing how real competition can help the consumer ![]()
