Hi.This might be the wrong forum but still.
We are about to migrate from Outlook/Exchange to Notes/Domino in a couple of months. In the mean time I want to run a Notes 6 client (only one client) on our Exchange 5.5 server to get a “hands on” the Notes environment.
If any of you could share resources on this or give me a hint on where I might finde guidlines, I’ll very much appreciate it.
Thanks.

If you’re running a Notes client on that machine, I don’t know how much worth that will be to you.
Since you’re only talking about a client, you should install it on your desktop, so you don’t possibly interfere with the Exch server.
It’s just a client you want, unless I’m misunderstanding.
Will you also have a Domino server setup somewhere?

I’m sorry I wasn’t quite clear about my wish. As you say, I want to install a Notes 6 client on my desktop computer and run in against a MS Exchange 5.5. server. Trying to install Notes 6 from default leaves me no option to choose MS Exchange as a server instead of Domino.
At this stage I won’t set up a Domino server, just get a view on the Notes client.
Please respond further.

You’re going to want to install a Domino server, and then at least one client to access that server. You can’t use Notes to access native Exchange the way you would use Outlook to do so. Notes is to Domino as Outlook is to Exchange, as far as native RPC.
You could set your Notes client up to use POP3 to access Exchange, but you’ve done nothing at that point except set yourself up just another POP3 client that does nothing else for you.

I disagree completely. Using Notes as a POP3 client will at least give him some hands on experience with the Notes client. Even knowing what the menu options are would be better than knowing nothing at all.
I’ve used Notes as my POP3 client at home for nearly four years with no problems, and you don’t have all the security headaches you do with Outlook or Outlook Express. Go ahead and set it up as a POP3 client for Exchange, you have nothing to lose and only experience to gain.
I really don’t see how using a mail file from dominodeveloper.net would be any different than POP3, he’s just replicating from a Notes server rather than polling POP3 mail. That’s exciting.
Just my $0.02.

Everybody. Thanks a lot. I was not surprised about the rather poor interface between Notes 6 and MS Exchange. Anyway I will try to do as Maria Helm indicate, check out dominodevelopment and try to get at host server there.
Thanks again.

Actually what you say is true either way. There is no native “interface” between either of the competing clients with the opposite competing server. Each has it’s own set of capabilities. Exchange is mainly a messaging system and Domino is a messaging/application server system.
Notes clients/Domino servers.
Outlook clients/Exchange servers.
There is no native client/server swapping (i.e. Notes/Exchange…Outlook/Domino) out of the box.
Domino will let the Outlook client access it “natively” with “Domino Access for Outlook,” (iNotes for Outlook) but the Notes client is very preferable as far as native access to the Domino server. There’s also webmail, “Domino Web Access” (iNotes), Domino Offline Services (for working with local replicas of Domino DBs directly in a browser, without installation of the Notes client). Lots of options you have with Domino.
If you’re an Exchange admin, it will take some getting work to get going on Domino, obviously. Sure, both products have their strengths and weaknesses, but that’s any product competing with any other.
Subject: Why do you call it a poor interface?
Notes was never designed to be an interface with Exchange. There are inherent differences in the systems, simple as that. Why do you think they are called “Competing Products”?
Subject: RE: Run Lotus Notes 6 on MS Exchange 5.5
It will not be a good use of your time to do this as all you will be able to do at best is read your mail and not explore all the other features of the Notes Client. You cannot use the exchange server except through POP or IMAP, and you have to have a user ID for the client, which is generated by the server.
Put a test ND6 server in place and get your feet wet with a complete environment.
Subject: RE: Run Lotus Notes 6 on MS Exchange 5.5
Agree, but you do NOT NEED a id file to use a notes client. You can perfectly run a Notes client stand-alone without a ID file, and let’s say, pop-mail. Someting else would be idiotic

Given the pain in the arse I have had trying to use POP accounts in the client…i won’t even use it for that…
Subject: Once you have it running, it works ok
I have had little problems with POP3 in ND6, altough I use native notes routing nowadays. At least when using Notes as POP3 you’re less vulnerable for viruses etc…
Subject: RE: Once you have it running, it works ok
Agree. With ND6 everything is smoothly creating during setup, and if you forget to set it up correctly, just select the reconfiguration wizard, and voila. No pain in the … at all.

I agree with the previous posts.
But there is one other option. Check out dominodeveloper.net . You can sign up with them for hosting, and get an ID file for their server, complete with a mailfile on their server. Make sure your firewall will allow your Notes traffic, and you can replicate up/down your mailfile from them and experience Notes mail and databases without having your own server.
