Rich text field displays with extra br at first line break

(trying to be crispy here)Sam Boyarsky noted the same problem that I have on 6th January 04: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd6forum.nsf/55c38d716d632d9b8525689b005ba1c0/

but I’ll repeat the problem here for clarity.

We have a web application that uses a notes rich text field for the main body

entry. We have a notes form used to enter the data, and a web form to display

it in a browser. The web form uses passthru html and css style sheets to

display the document nicely, but when domino renders the computed rich text

body field it adds 5 br tags to the end of the first paragraph.

For example if the notes user has entered

"1 this is the first paragraph

2 this is the second paragraph

3 this is the third paragraph"

in the rich text field, it is displayed with 5
tags between "first

paragraph" and “2 this…”

If the notes user puts a line break before entering any text (e.g. "

1 this is the first paragraph…"

then the <br> tags are automatically added before the “1 this is…”

The page source then looks something like:

…

document title,/h1>

1 this is the first paragraph

2 this is the second paragraph…

I’ll stress that

1 the web form does not use tables, nor are there any tables in the rich text

field that the notes users create.

2 I’ve tried setting the design of the form with and without subforms (which

others have suggested may be the problem).

3 the web form has the body field on the same line as the passthru html, so it

is nothing to do with too many breaks in the form design. The form looks

something like

…passthru html stuff ends here> RichTextBodyField <passthru html stuff

continues here…

4 I don’t think it has anything to do with the fact that I’m using a computed

rich text field to display the information.

The problem seems to me to appear whenever passthru html is used on the same

page as a rich text field that has multiple paragraphs. Has this problem

really existed for so long without a solution? Is it just the way the domino

rendering engine works when converting rich text to html? Or haven’t I

searched well enough?

If anyone here can shed some light on this I’d be delighted. Thanks for wading

through this far!

NB Notes version 6.53 or thereabouts for both clients and server, but we’ve had

the problem since at least 5 something. Not willing to upgrade to 7 just yet.

OS is mixture of windows xp, 2000 and mac osX.3 or 4. Same problem appears in

all of these, so it is platform independant as far as I can see.
