RFC3834 and out-of-office agent

There is a problem with the out-of-office agent. Contrary to RFC3834 (excerpt below) it responds to listservs even when the message header includes the RFC Precedence of “bulk” or “list”

While this is basically an annoyance, wonderful software such as Notes/Domino should play nice with the RFC’s

Adding something simple to the agent (such as an exclusion if Precedence = bulk or list and assuring that the mail was address to a user and not a list) would fix it.

RFC3834:

  • Personal and Group responses whose purpose is to notify the sender

of a message of a temporary absence of the recipient (e.g.,

“vacation” and “out of the office” notices) SHOULD NOT be issued

unless a valid address for the recipient is explicitly included in

a recipient (e.g., To, Cc, Bcc, Resent-To, Resent-Cc, or Resent-

Bcc) field of the subject message. Since a recipient may have

multiple addresses forwarded to the same mailbox, recipients

SHOULD be able to specify a set of addresses to the responder

which it will recognize as valid for that recipient.

Subject: RFC3834 and out-of-office agent

Does anybody know if this is still true? I have a client who sent out 160,000 mails and got back 2,500 Out of Office responses. I hasten to add this was a valid company-wide mass mailing and not a SPAM flood.
