RFC for SMTP standards with an ! mark in a mail address

Hi, not sure if my terminology is correct here.

I’m looking for an RFC about SMTP standards, i.e. rejecting a mail due to an ! (exclamanation mark) in the mail address.

I just want to find the RFC which statres whether or not it is allowed.

Sorry if I’m being vague.

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2821.txt It would appear to be technically permitted…with a caveat in 4.1.2
