Return address on outbound messages not using Global Domain Rules

I have been reviewing postings of similar issues to this but nothing yet I have read has the same scenario.

We are currently operating 2 Domino systems, each in a separate Domino domain. One of the systems, a new one, hosts the Domino SMTP gateways. The other system is where the user mailfiles reside. The 2 domains are cross certified and email flows both internally and to/from the internet without any issues. The problem I see is that when users send external emails using DWA the return address that is being sent out is being rejected by a number of recipient systems because of the format, i.e. “firstname_lastname%dominodomain@internetdomain.com”. The rule in the Global Domain document (in both systems) says to use ‘common name’ in the construction of the address and to NOT use the Domino domain.

The reason for the 2 Domino systems is due to us being in the process of separating from a parent company. One thing to bear in mind is that users in the new system have a different hierarchical name so there will be no match found for the sender in the Domino directory of the new system and so the rule in the Global Domain document should be used… but it isn’t…

So how come it works for messages from Notes clients and not for DWA ???

Not at my server right now, but off the top of my head…

Goto configuration doc for outbound STMP server, goto “MIME\Conversion Options\Outbound”, then in the field “Lookup Internet addresses for all Notes Addresses…” Enable this field, do a tell SMTP quit, tell SMTP load or restart. Should be fine.

This is field is already set to ‘enabled’.

I think the problem stems from the fact that the sender is not actually in the Domino Directory of the domain where the SMTP server is. I have thought about using Directory Assistance to access the other systems Domino Directory to overcome this problem but having the 2 Domino domains is only a temporary situation and will go away eventually. Question is, how long will my users put up with this issue…???

Any other suggestions will be greatfully received.
