Hello folks,
I am writing SA exam soon and would like to have myself covered for potential questions on this particular Domino configuration error:
{
Router: Failed to connect to SMTP host XYZ.COM because : The server is not responding. The server may be down or you may be experiencing network problems. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists.
}
I am a “seasoned” Domino Developer but a very green Admin, so please bear with me, folks! Ok, after various research in the forum and IBM Lotus technote, I have managed to gather the following potential “causes” and their respective “resolutions”:-
Cause 1:
The port 25 for SMTP traffic has not been opened for the Domino Server.
Resolution:
Open up the port 25 for SMTP traffic on the corporate firewall.
Cause 2:
There is domain name resolution issue for the Domino Server.
Resolution:
Specify the hostname of the DNS server in the notes.ini file by adding the line “DNSServer=xx.xx.xx.xx”.
Cause 3:
You are using a gateway for SMTP outbound traffic (e.g. a firewall server or an ISP server) but this has not configured in the configuration document of the Domino mail server.
Resolution:
Put the resolvable hostname of the SMTP gateway into the configuration document of the Domino mail server.
-
Edit the configuration document,
-
Go to the Router/SMTP tab and click on the Basics tab,
-
Update the hostname of the DNS server under the field “Relay host for messages leaving the local internet domain:”,
-
Save and close the configuration document,
-
Restart the Domino Router.
Did I missed anything else besides the above? Please advise me, and thanks in advance!!! =)
Cheers!
