We have approx 45 Domino servers sprerad across the world and need to change our Mail Domain from MPG to XYZ (example). The IBM support recommendation is to do it all at once by shutting down all Domino servers , modifying the notes.ini and names.nsf on server 1, starting server 1, checking, bringing it down , moving an OS copy to server 2 etc etc.Eventually when all servers are done , a button would be sent to users that would update the mail domain field on the client desktops.
Two problems I see:
1.Not many companies can afford to shut down their entire systems
2.What happens to mail already in users inbox that they subsequently reply to…that has the old Notes domain? Wont it fail?
Change MailDomain in person, group, mail-in database, server and connection (SourceDomain / DestinationDomain) docs. Also check for CalendarDomain field in person docs with a value in it. I like to make a local replica to make these changes off line.
Add old domain name to Domain Aliases field in Global Domain Doc. Change domain references in any other domain docs (adjacent, non-adjacent, etc)
Make sure all mail has been delivered
shut down domino
delete old names.nsf (or move to temp location) and replace with new version with updated documents
open a DOS prompt and run updall on names.nsf (nupdall names.nsf -R on windows)
modify Domain= in notes.ini
start domino when updall completes
Open your resource reseravtions db(s) and switch to the sites view. create an agent to change the domain on each site doc. shut down domino on this server (and any other RR servers) delete busytime.nsf (or clubusy.nsf). start domino and issue “tell sched validate” if not already running
send button to a few test users to update the MailDomain field on their location docs and I like to change the MailDomain in any contacts too. users should restart their client after pressing the button.
the technote is terrible, way out of date and lots of new stuff to consider that didn’t exist back then. There is no way of getting around a restart of the Domino server but you certainly don’t need to copy the files to a new server.
