Rename Process Stops at Initiate Rename in Address Book

I am having the “Rename Process Stops at Initiate Rename in Address Book” problem. The rename is carried out only in the person document, but never gets pushed into the user’s ID files and groups are not renamed. I see that there have been similar problems with previous versions, but I am having this problem with version 7.0.

Has anyone else experienced this? I can think of one thing that is different for me–I have most of my users in another Domain because we are using Outlook for mail (I know, I know…).

Is there a reason that a rename would not go past this point because of the Domain field in the person document being different?

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Well in order for the remaining steps to kick off the user has to authenticate with their home mail server at whch time the ID file should get updated. That’s the way it used to work. I’m not on 7.0 so maybe it has changed since then. The user used to get prompted to accept their new name but now it just updates automatically the next time the user authenticates using the Notes client. If they are using Outlook for mail are they even using the Notes client at all?

Yes, they are using the client for other applications and have authenticated with their home server. The client settings are even set to automatically set to accept name changes (no prompts to user, no need for them to accept it).

Thanks for the response, Paul. Any other thoughts?

if the ID is not updating it’s possible the Public Key in the user ID is out of sync with the Public Key stored in the person doc. When this happens the name update process does not work. To check if they are not the same you export the Public Key out of the ID by going to User Security and when the window opens click on Your Certificates the click the Other Options > Mail, Copy Certificate. Mail the certificate to yourself. Then compare the last 10 or so digits to the Certified Public Key field in the user’s person doc. If they are not the same you need to copy/paste the Public Key from the ID into the person doc then save it. Now you ned to resubmit the name change again. It’s a pain in the butt.

Hi, Paul. It was nice of you to respond. I will try this out and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again for your help!

This didn’t work. Is there a step I’m missing? I did update the public key in the address book and was then able to issue another rename to the same name (e.g., John Doe to John Doe), which I couldn’t do before.

The person is renamed in the address book, but the ID file is not getting the update. The only thing that works is to update the person document through the registration process. Of course, that’s a pain because then we have to overwrite their ID file.

Any other thoughts?

We don’t use the Domino Directory for renames or recertifications. We actually have a third party application that submits requests via adminp and provides a central repository for our IDs, however we have occasionally had this same and/or similar problems. Either the ID doesn’t get changed or the group memberships and mail file ACL and owner aren’t updated. Much of it, we change manually, except in the case of the ID file.

When you submit the original request, does the first line of the User Name field match that of the Notes ID? This is the most common problem that we’ve had. If the ID file name doesn’t match that first line of the user name field in the person document, the request fails to complete. We’ve manually changed the user name field to match the ID and it has worked on the second request every time.

I would like to know why the group memberships and mail file information doesn’t update sometimes, while other times there are no issues.
