I have an R6 server that is the Administration server and I would like to create a R5 server for Sametime as well as to run Cyrstal Reports. Can I do this? Or can R6 only be used to create additional R6 servers?
Thanks,
Chris

Techinically speaking an R6 server does not create servers. But yes you can create a server id using 6 for 5. There were potential problem with using R5 to create an R4.x user, but I think it was because of the password recovery portion.
If you think about it and upgrade from R5 to R6, you used an id which was R5 original and had a server which uses the R6 source code.

Thanks Joe , but my main concern is the replication that takes place between the main server "(R6 Administration Server) and the “additional” server (R5). Catalog, Directory, templates and whatever else. These files will be in R6 format and will be replicated to an R5 server. I was concerned about compatibility and complications that may arise from this.

That is our current configuration and if others have not isolated their Sametime/Quickplace servers in their own Domino domains they’ll be doing the same.
We don’t share replication with the R6 admin server of anything other than the names, admin4, events4 and a directory assistance database, but there are no issue.
The only problem I’ve run into is the R5 design seeping back into the address book - this happened immediately after upgrading to 3.01/5.0.12 for the QP server in our environment and removing the template on the R5 servers will keep them from refreshing for any reason and replicating the R5 design back.

I guess I am going to be a little different in my answer here.
It is OK to share the data within those databases (admin4.nsf, events4.nsf, directory assistance, names.nsf, etc). WHAT you do not want to share is the design of those databases, because there is a change the server code could not provide something which is meant for R6. So the R5 servers should only have EDITOR access to the R6 Administrator server databases.
I think this is the most important fact that many people grasp for Domino/Lotus Notes. Once you understand how the design of those database relate to the server source code, you have a “ACE in your pocket”.
Feel free to email if you have questions.
