I’m soliciting for opinions before I try something…
I’m running an ND6 server as my test and development box. It’s on a W2K Server platform and runs nicely enough for my purposes.
I want to do some tyre-kicking on QuickPlace, but that won’t run on ND6, so I’m going to need to install an R5 server.
Problem: I only have one server box.
That’s easily enough fixed - the two servers will co-exist on the same box, even though it’s not supported. And this isn’t a production machine, so it’s not that much of a problem.
So, I’m thinking about doing this, and then I realise - I want both of these servers in the same domain. OK, shouldn’t be a problem…?
I’ve only ever installed a later version of a server into a domain, so the version of the Directory that gets pulled across wasn’t an issue - it just got upgraded. What’s going to happen when I pull an ND6 Directory across onto an R5 server install?
Any ideas out there? I’m certain someone must have done it before…

I would not trust this on windows operating system (R5 and R6 on the same box). In the R4/R5 world it worked, but IBM warned that this is supported.
If this was aix or unix or linux I would say do it because the instances will run within their own directories. Just keep in mind you need to have enough hardware resources to run these server applications.
But to answer your question as long as the R5 server can connect to the R6 server, it will get the directory. BUT!!! remember the R6 design was meant for R6 not R5. I would state you need to regress the design back to R5.

There are no script functions which would cause a circular loop errors? Just want to be safe for all our users out there. I don’t have R5 around to test it against a R6 server.
Subject: Nope, I have 5.x and 6.x servers running from the same R6 Directory Design.
Even My Remark Messaging Assistant works with it.

I’m aware it’s not supported, however I know it can be done. (If IBM would give us a version of QuickPlace that would work with ND6 then it wouldn’t be necessary. It’s only been what - 18 months now…)
This isn’t a production machine, just an experiment box for me to learn the technologies on. So I’m willing to take a bit of a risk with it.
