How many of you find it necessary to run fixup, compact and updall with the server down prior to upgrading to Domino 8? IBM does recommend it. Only problem is, it takes a long time to run on larger servers which contain hundreds of databases.
I just wanted to hear anyone else’s thoughts on the subject.
Subject: Running fixup/compact/updall all depends…
Different IBM documents treat this differently. Some advise running these housekeeping tasks offline both before and after the code upgrade. Some just recommend running them after the upgrade.
My preference would be to run them before and after on the admin server, and on any other critical servers that don’t have large volumes of data (mail hubs, mail gateways, BES server). On large mail and apps servers, I think I would compromise by running these tasks only on the key system databases (names.nsf, admin4.nsf), but I would also want to have a good backup of all databases plus notes.ini and the server ID to handle various corruption scenarios.
I would then integrate fixup and updall into a planned upgrade of the ODS for the mail files (or app databases), to happen during a period of low demand. And I would implement design, document and LZ1 attachment compression at the same time.
