Problem importing dates from Excel - $5 and $6 fields?

I am trying to import data from Access via Excel (yes, we’re working on an ongoing ODBC link; this is an interim arrangement).

After exporting the data from Access in Excel format, I am using the Notes “View defined” import option with Excel data columns correlating to the Notes view field columns.

All is working well, except for the two date format fields. After the import, the view displays the correct date (plus the time 12:00:00 AM), but when I open the actual document, the two date fields are empty.

When I check the Fields tab on the document properties, the two date fields do not actually appear on the list of fields (that is, it’s not just that the fields are empty, they are NOT THERE), but there are two fields called “$5” and “$6” that contain the date/time data that appears to be populating the columns, even though the columns’ definitions are the correct field names (incidentally, called “StartDate” and “EndDate”).

Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on; where the $5 and $6 fields are coming from, and how I can get the data to load correctly?

Just in case it’s relevant, the Notes date fields are of the type Date/Time, and I have tried formatting the Excel columns in both Number format and Date format - same outcome.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Helen.
