Pricing confusion - help please

Hi I’m trying to work out the pricing for Domino and Notes clients and to be honest its not making much sense.

For instance if we have a dual core server running domino 7, for messaging and databases, what server type do we need and whats the cost?

I find it amazing that its so complicated trying to work out what you actually need to pay. Has someone from Microsoft’s licensing department started working for IBM?

Heh heh. Yeah, we priced out two new servers yesterday to act as a (redundant/clustered) POP server for a new domain we are setting up. Our company buys the newest hardware technology available so that it will last more than a year or two. Right now that means a quad-core, dual processor server.

A server license that would have cost us less than 2 grand a year ago is now being quoted as $3900 - or $7800 for both servers!! You have GOT to be kidding me. For a stinking POP server that I could probably get for free somewhere else?!?

So we have 2 choices - buy 5-year-old servers to run our enterprise software on, or get a quote for Exchange. Sadly, we’ve gotten the quote. Not all of our Notes servers will RUN on antiquated equipment, and even as a die-hard Notes advocate (and ANTI-Microsoft person), I simply cannot justify that large of a raise in prices. I would imagine that our purely-IBM shop will be making the switch to Microsoft that our parent company has been pushing for for quite awhile now. We simply can’t justify that huge of a cost increase with no additional benefit.
