Primary Server A and Failover Server B in the US - In Domino Cluster USPrimary Server A2 and failover server B2 in Europe Domino Cluster Europe
Us users mail files are on A & B and B2
European Users mail files are on A2, B2 and B
So I have LAN clustering for both sights , and for DR ( if we loose a primary site) I have full instances of peoples mail files on a site in another geographical location. heres the problem
I do not want to synchronise the data on the two geographical sites via Domin Clustering, updating over night is fine, the WAN traffic that that would generate would be very costly all for a just in case scenario that would potentially never happen.
I could add server B2 in to the US cluster with servers A and B, and disable the cluster replicator and then I would have seamless failover for the US users and seamless mail routing. But I loose its ability to act as a LAN Domino Cluster for Server A2 in Europe, and I basically have a server sitting there waiting for a disaster , vs sitting there waiting for a disaster and giving high availability in Europe.
What would love to be able to do is preferred failover
Server A updates with Server B via Domino clustering practically instantaneously. Server B replicates with Server B2 once a night. If Server A is unavailable the user fails to server B, if B is unavailable the users fails to B2
Server A2 updates with Server B2 via DC practically instantaneously. Server B2 replicates with Server B once a night. If server A2 is unavailable then the user fails to server B2, if B2 is unavailable the use fails to B
Thus I have high availability , yet I maximise our infrastructure and I do not saturate the bandwidth with update traffic waiting for the What if instance that might never happen. If it does happen I know that the performance will be very poor compared to production. But this is DR … you want them to have the functionality until you have the production up and running.
