Poor performance - 6.5.4 / SuSE Linux 8 / Agent manager

Hi,here’s the key config on the machine:

Box: Compaq

Processor speed: 1 GHz

RAM 1,5 GB

Diskspace: >50 gigs free

OS: SuSE Linux server ver. 8

Domino version 6.5.4

Problem:

We’ve installed a ‘global calendar’. An agent loops through the mail/calendar files, collects the calendar entries and puts them in the global calendar. This process is scheduled to run every third hour. When the agent starts, it steals all available CPU, and the users can’t use the system. (Well they can, but everything goes sooo painfully slow). This goes on for 30 minutes, which is the maximum available time for agents at daytime.

The strange thing is that the same agent will run smoothly on an NT-based server.

There’s only 60 mail databases on this server, the average file size is - say 400 megs.

================================

Does anyone see an obvious reason for this poor performance ? The server was installed and configured by Linux professionals, and they can’t see any reason why the Domino server is so slow either.

Please help.

Regards,

Bjorn

I don’t know if you have the possibility to upgrade to Domino 7, but performance of Domino 7 on Linux is about 400% better than of Domino 6.5.x, bringing it on par with other OSses and making it the preferred platform for Domino 7. That said, this also implies that Linux is not the best platform for Domino 6…

You can try to use the server.load utility that’s coming with Notes/Domino to try to find the performance bogger. Also TeamStudio includes an application to show the time every step of an agent takes, which could help you to find where the performance goes down.
