Out of Office question

Hi,

This weekend our server (running Domino and BES) got locked up due to insufficient disk space. Eventually our admins did some BES cleanup that freed up 65Gb and all’s well now.

We are trying to find what could have happened to cause this problem - when the server normally showed 70GB free most of the time.

Although it appeared to be a BES issue, as a preventive measure we are also looking into Notes Out of Office agent potentially causing this problem when two people (both have the agent enabled) sent a message to each other. Would this cause Out of Office to keep sending notifications to both the users in a loop? If yes, is there a way to prevent this?

Thanks for all the help !

Ayaz,The oof is designed to send only one time a mail to the same user.

So i do not think that this is related to that agent.

What you can do is set a mailrule to not accept “n” mb for an email to prevent that anyone is sending email with TO large attachments and not filling upyour precious diskspace.

Greetz,

thanks a lot Ronny !

what is important to know is why the diskspace got filled up.70Gb is a lot of diskspace

Did you check the Domlog? Is this a windows server? Assuming you checked the administrative tools, application, security etc. logs…

The windows logs should at least narrow down the time frame of the occurence…compare it to the time emails sent, and other agents ran in domino and the BES application…

Is it possible this was a slow problem that gradually built up, that just wasn’t noticed? If it happened all at once, narrowing down the time it happened it the first clue in this CSI mystery.

It shouldn’t be the OoO agent.

My first guess is that it was the BES logs located (by default) in \Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Logs. I have seen these get massive previously. For this month I only have 600MB of BES logs, but I have seen some days where we could have 4+ GB of data for a single day. Since the BES admins “found” the problem, I bet this is what they found.

Generally, I will create a zip file for each month and drag the entire previous month’s worth of logs into that zip file. If you haven’t been having any BES issues, you could probably just delete the previous month, week, or day since they are just logs. The log files compress by a factor of about 10.
