Subject: Compacting of Traveler *.dat files

I was wondering if there are any plans for a compact feature for the *.dat files stored under Traveler\ntsdb\seq0 folder on Traveler server? With 1500 users using the Traveler server these files are getting huge. Since last prime sync 2 months ago these files are now 8 GB and counting…

Subject: RE: Compacting of Traveler *.dat files

Traveler already does this. It is part of the Defrag tell command. “tell traveler debughelp” will show you that command and usage information. It is a debug command, so it does not show up under regular “help”.

You can run it directly or you can run it as one of the commands on shutdown. The help for shutdown tells you more about that too.

Subject: RE: Compacting of Traveler *.dat files

One more option… You can do it on load time as well (load traveler -defrag).

Load and shutdown are the best options because it happens when users are not using the system.

Subject: Re: Compacting of Traveler *.dat files

These are the Traveler database files, and depending on the number of users you have and the number of records they are syncing, this can grow large. But often once the database has allocated some space for data but then the data is removed, the space is not freed up. So if space is becoming an issue, there is a command you can use to defragment the database and compress the records. We recommend backing up the ntsdb directory first if you have room. You can delete the backup after the defragged version is working.

  1. Shutdown the traveler task using “tell traveler quit”

  2. Once traveler is down, load it back using

load traveler -defrag

  1. You will see the defrag process running at the start of the traveler load, similar to :

load traveler -defrag

Subject: iPhone - (De-)select PIM options from Server

For iPhone it’s currently not possible to (de-)select any of the Device “Preferences” (one, or more from mail, calendar, ToDos, Contacts and Journal) from the server, either through Traveler Device Setttings or Policies. This is a known limitation and an Enhancement Request has been created “RSSN-7NRJ4G”. Can IBM please state when and in which version(s) this will become available (e.g. 8.52FPn or 8.53)?

Subject: RE: iPhone - (De-)select PIM options from Server

We do not commit to when a requirement will be done, so I cannot tell you if or when it will be done. All requirements are constantly being evaluated for priority and ability to implement the changes.

Subject: Is it possible to set up mirrored traveler servers behind load balancer

I understand that Traveler clustering isn’t available right now, but alternatively could some sort of failover be configured if a load balancer sits between Traveler and mobile devices?

Subject: RE: Is it possible to set up mirrored traveler servers behind load balancer

While it is possible, you may not want to do it.

The clustering or high availability requirement is a high priority requirement. It is not there now, but I just wanted you to be reassured that it is a high priority to be addresses going forward.

Whenever the device switches servers, a “replace data” or “slow” sync will take place. This will delete all the data off the device and get a new copy of the data from the server. This takes time (the user may notice the data disappearing) and uses quite a bit of bandwidth.

You would not want a load balancer to randomly assign devices - you would want them to be “sticky” to one server over the others. Also, if they are using both server, the servers would both be monitoring the backend mail databases, so that would double the traffic to the mail database as well.

So, you can put a load balancer in front, but you have to make sure the usability is going to be what you want.

Subject: Traveler new message indicators

Exec’s and others asked if there is a way to monitor incoming mail using a visual indicator (i.e. like the blackberry does with a blinking led) and/or associate a sound based on mail from a user or a response to a sent message.

Subject: RE: Traveler new message indicators

Traveler has new message indicators for messages that are new in the Inbox. It varies per device based on what alert options are applicable to the device. There is no customization for items outside of the Inbox.
