Open Mic call Sept 3rd 2009 on "IBM Lotus iNotes for Domino 8.5"

IBM Lotus will host a public Open Mic conference call on September 3rd 2009 at 10 am EDT with a topic of “IBM Lotus iNotes for Domino 8.5”. This is an opportunity to ask questions of the IBM lab personnel who develop, test and support IBM Lotus iNotes.

For further detail, see this document: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3651&uid=swg21398705

You can pre-submit questions as response documents to this posting, and you can also ask questions on the call without pre-submitting them.

Please join us September 3rd. We look forward to talking with you. Thank you.

Subject: iNotes vs full Notes client

Our management is always interested in getting away from a thick Notes client deploy that has to be upgraded and maintained, to a thin browser based iNotes client.

Within 8.5 what is the cross/client feature functionality comparison between the two interfaces?

Are there any email calendar functionalities that the iNotes client still can not do?

Subject: Packaging of DOLS/Domino Synch Manager

Hello,

I work for a financial institution and am involved in SOE and software deployment activities. We run a “locked down” SOE where “normal” users have limited access to modify files and settings on their machine. They are not able to install software for themselves.

We are currently trying to package DOLS/Domino Synch Manager (for controlled/automated deployment later down the track), but have hit the following stumbling blocks:

1 - The “Install Subscription” process checks that the current user has “Read and Execute” permissions to “C:”. Could this check be modified to something more specific to iNotes? e.g. “C:\Program Files\Lotus iNotes”. We could conceivably grant users the required access rights to “C:”, but this would jeopardise the security of the SOE.

2 - The “Install Subscription” process generates and/or modifies files and folders inside:

"C:\Program Files\Lotus iNotes\"

"C:\Program Files\Lotus iNotes\DOLS\"

"C:\Program Files\Lotus iNotes\data\"

Could this behaviour be modified to redirect the files to be written to other (user specific) locations (again so that users need not be granted access to “system” locations)?

3 - The “Install Subscription” process generates “Uninstall Lotus Domino Synch Manager” and “Lotus Domino Synch Manager Help” shortcuts in the start menu. Can this be turned off? (We wish to control explicitly which applications shortcuts are available to each user)

Thanks

Tim

Subject: ID Vault and ID in Mail File

So, am I correct that 8.5.1 will no longer require me to put the ID file in the mail file if I use the ID vault? I need to do this for mail recall in iNotes as well as iNotes and iPhone encryption (using Traveler 8.5.1).

Subject: re: ID Vault and ID in Mail File

Yes, iNotes 8.5.1 supports the Notes ID Vault integration.

There is an additional Policy setting needed to enable iNotes integration/usage with the Vault:

“Allow Notes-based programs (iNotes) to use the NotesID Vault”
But, even with the Vault, the Notes ID file will still exist in the mailfile after updating with the Vault.

Subject: From the developer

Hi,
There is an additional Policy setting needed to enable iNotes integration/usage with the Vault.
Yes, even with the Vault, the Notes ID file will exist in the mailfile(at least in the current release, that may change in the future).
I can respond.

thanks,
Bart

Subject: 8.0.2 mail template on 8.5 server uses forms85.nsf

We copied a mail file that uses the 8.0.2 mail template onto our 8.5 test server. The browser user interface appears to use the forms85.nsf and has all the new 8.5 web features (tabbed interface, sidebar, etc…). This feature is desirable as it allows web mail users to benefit from the new UI without upgrading the template design.

My question: Is this configuration supported? Alternatively, is the 8.5 mail template fully supported for use by 8.0.2 clients?

Subject: will iNotes 8.5.1 harvest IDs?

We have about 3600 DWA users without any Notes loaded. They were all created last year (new Lotus shop) to use DWA 8.01 only, but ID files were not retained. Will ID Vault be able to harvest these IDs from users who have never used Notes? That would be sweet!john3

Subject: If you had generated ids previously…then yes

As long as the ids were generated and placed within the user mail files, then, yes, when ID Vault is enabled these ids will be vaulted.

Subject: Encrypted Email

This is an odd question…so please understand the situation in addition to the question!

Our primary encryption CA/key administration is NOT in Lotus Notes–but, rather, an external CA application that integrates with Windows (but not Notes).

When someone outside our business encrypts an email to us using the external CA’s key, our users receive the encrypted email.

This works fine with the Notes client, since that client simply displays a blank message with the encrypted email as an attachment. Via the Windows file associations, the user can open/decrypt that attachment and view the contents.

However, in DWA/iNotes, the user simply gets an error about not having the right key to decrypt the email. It would be far better (at least for us) to have DWA act like the regular client…by showing the encrypted message as an attachment to a blank email message. That would let the user download the message & decrypt it using the external application.

Any chance of getting this in 8.5.1?

Subject: Custom Forms opened in iNotes Lite framework

We have custom forms in our mailfiles. In iNotes 8.5 Full mode these forms are opened in the Classic framework using the scene s_OtherNotesForms.

When I switch to Lite mode a ‘regular’ memo is opened in Lite Scene Memo while the custom forms are still opened in Classic Scene s_OtherNotesForms (using the code defined in Custom_JS subform - Scene_PostLoad).

Where is the place to define the forms to open in the Lite framework for Lite mode so that I can use the code in Custom_JS_Lite - Scene_PostLoad_Lite?

Subject: See wiki article

Check out this article in the Lotus Notes and Domino wiki:

http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/dominowiki.nsf/dx/manipulating-data-in-inotes-lite-forms

Look at the section which talks about the Forms Map table.

Subject: Thank you very much!!

Subject: Room owner cannot accept/decline room reservation from iNotes

Are there any plans to address this issue in future releases of iNotes?

Subject: Auto Save in iNotes

I believe this is in IdeaJam already and I’ve already voted but since I have users asked me about it…I decided to post the question here to see if you have any plans to have an auto save feature in iNotes.

Subject: This is a feature we are currently looking at

We will be reviewing it for a future release. (post 8.5.1)

Subject: Wonderful!

We will be waiting for it…

Subject: inotes and archive

Is there a redbook, red paper, wiki, step by step… somewhere about DWA 8.5 and archive

I can’t make it work

2nd thing, how can we prevent users to make change in archiving settings in DWA prefs. I 'd like to have all gray as we can have on standard client.

Subject: Some answers and questions

Is there a redbook, red paper, wiki, step by step… somewhere about DWA 8.5 and archive

Can’t give a date yet, but yes, we are planning on writing a Wiki article to describe how to do archiving in iNotes. If you have suggestions on things you’d like to see, please let us know.

I can’t make it work

Can you please provide more details? e.g. are you using local or server-based archiving? Do you have archive policies?

2nd thing, how can we prevent users to make change in archiving settings in DWA prefs. I 'd like to have all gray as we can have on standard client.

In 8.5.1, we added some initial support for archive policies in iNotes. Note that these policies are intended only for server-based archiving. As part of this support, we also will honor the prohibit private archiving option in the archive policy which effectively allows the admin to lock down the archive preference settings in iNotes.
