Subject: OK to Virtualize Domino 7.0 Servers?
We virtualized our 8.x server without any issues. We set it up as a clean new server with a new name, replicated the apps onto it, downed old and new servers, renamed the VM to the old domino name, brought it back up and were in business.
Be advised that licensing on VMs can be tricky. Depending on your licencing scheme, you may want to investigate something called sub-capacity licensing and also the IBM license Management Tool (ILMT). For most license types, the default PVU computation is based on the machine hosting the VMs, NOT the actual VM you’re using for Domino (in other words, you’d have to pay for all the CPUs in the monster box supporting your VMs not the couple of CPUs you’re using). Sub-cap allows you to claim just the CPU’s you’re using BUT you then need to prove it by either using the ILMT or manual audits (which are only allowed under certain conditions).
Good luck
